Barrio es Escuela is the first structured street art and graffiti school in Puerto Rico, designed by and for children and youth. More than just an "art program," it's a vibrant community—made up of children, youth, educators, artists, and community organizers—who come together to learn, create, and defend their right to imagine, care for, and transform our urban spaces. Through programming, gatherings, workshops, tours, urban interventions, and fanzines, children and youth become educators of themselves and their community, artists of their streets, and stewards of shared space.
We embrace the concept of "school" not to replicate its traditional structures, but to transform them. We reclaim the Greek root of the word "scholé"—which means free time dedicated to reflection, play, and thought—and propose that neighborhood spaces can be safe, creative, and educational places where children and young people can learn freely, at their own pace, and from their own experiences. One of the fundamental pillars of Barrio es Escuela (Neighborhood is School) is the empowerment of children and young people. It's about creating spaces where they can express themselves, lead processes, and transform their environment.
MISSION
To build a space for popular education and street art that fosters autonomy, social justice, and critical thinking in children and youth in Mayagüez, using the neighborhood and territory as a classroom and learning tool.
VISION
To be a model of alternative education that strengthens the community fabric through street art, promoting the active participation of young people in building fairer, more supportive and self-managed futures.

CURRENT STAGE OF THE INITIATIVE
Currently, Barrio es Escuela (Neighborhood is School) is in a territorial implementation phase, which involves moving from conceptualization to the construction of community urban infrastructure. This refers to the network of relationships, spaces, and mechanisms that allow the school to operate visibly, safely, and continuously. We are identifying and activating a set of streets, corners, facades, and vacant lots—around the project's two core spaces, Taller Lumpen and Taller Libertá—that can be recognized as an "Educational Territorial Action Zone." This Zone will be able to develop autonomously, carefully, and consistently.

EDUCATIONAL TERRITORIAL ACTION ZONE
The "Zone" is an urban and educational strategy that seeks to delimit, activate and protect a specific area of Mayagüez as a safe, accessible and creative environment for popular education, intergenerational coexistence, community art and civic practice.
The area unfolds around the Mayagüez Market Square. It focuses on a handful of specific streets, lots, and structures that share affection, history, collective memory, and daily use. This neighborhood scale responds to a strategic vision : to transform the city from the sidewalks we walk, from the blocks we inhabit, from the faces we know.
Barrio es Escuela has been formed step by step, alongside children, young people, families, artists, and educators who believe in the real possibility of building a collective, sensitive, and transformative project from within the community. We seek to offer a model for supporting urban development through territorial justice, grassroots creativity, and the active participation of new generations.
Today, more than ever, we need courageous and genuine alliances that recognize the transformative power of children and the power of the neighborhood level. We invite you to join, support, and collaborate with this initiative.
